Welcome to the first EQA client newsletter of 2025 and the first under the new brand of Aurevia!
Topics covered in this newsletter:
We have the joy to announce that Labquality is now Aurevia, a company of experienced experts dedicated to advancing healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and medical technology development.
Under Aurevia, external quality assessments (EQAS), regulatory affairs and quality assurance, clinical research and auditing merge to form a new powerhouse. As a full-service contract research organization, we bring extensive experience in pharmaceuticals, medical devices and in vitro diagnostic devices. We remain a trusted EQA partner committed to maintaining clinical laboratory quality standards.
This allows us to combine our expertise, innovation, and capabilities to deliver a broader range of services more efficiently while remaining focused and committed to offering flexible and practical approaches.
While our company and brand are evolving, the people you have collaborated with are still there for you. Your existing contacts and schemes will continue uninterrupted, supported by the enhanced resources of our united team.
Regarding the external quality assessment service, we decided to keep the Labquality name as the service name due to its established recognition and accreditation status. Therefore, Labquality EQAS by Aurevia external quality assessment services can still be found on our websites, instruction letters, EQA reports and brochures under the trusted familiar name.

Over 1,100 professionals from around the world gathered at Messukeskus for Labquality Days 2025 to explore the latest in laboratory medicine, and health technology, and network with colleagues. We were very proud to host some of the best speakers in the field. The exhibition featured 60 companies presenting new services and products of the industry. Between the scientific session and attending the exhibition, delegates had the opportunity to relax in the Neurosonic low-frequency divans and pose in the 360° photo booth at the evening event.
The congress was opened by Aurevia’s Managing Director, Juha-Pekka Nuutinen, followed by a captivating lecture on AI and robotics in healthcare by Timo Kupsa. He highlighted AI’s growing role in disease detection, personalized treatment, medical imaging, and hospital operations, urging companies to develop AI strategies and consider technical, ethical, and regulatory factors.
Subsequent speakers delved into AI applications in clinical labs, emergency healthcare, cancer diagnosis, and pathology. Dr Jari Laru introduced the EU AI Act, promoting reliable, risk-based AI with literacy obligations effective from February 2025. Professor Ivan Brandslund shared how machine learning algorithms are identifying cancer risks through blood tests, while Tapio Lahtiharju discussed a neural network project for serum protein electrophoresis interpretation at the Helsinki University Hospital. Darshan Kumar from Aiforia Technologies demonstrated how AI aids pathologists by pinpointing probable tumour areas and streamlining case worklists.
The second day focused on laboratory results fit for purpose, with Dr Qing Meng covering tumour biomarker testing, Dr Anne Elisabeth Solsvik showcasing big data in the NOPAM EQA program, and Carl Johan Östgren offering a clinician’s perspective on diabetes type 2 diagnosis and monitoring.
The Scientific Committee awarded Rosie Forster’s ePoster ”Interference in Estradiol Assays from Hormone Therapies Used in Breast Cancer Treatment" the best ePoster this year! Congratulations to Rosie and the UK NEQAS team!
We also want to congratulate this year’s Quality Excellence Award recipients: Elvar Theodorsson, Piet Meijer, and Robert Ginsberg. They have made significant contributions to various quality-related initiatives in healthcare and laboratory medicine.
The congress concluded on a high note with breakdancer and motivational speaker Johannes Hattunen’s energetic plenary lecture. This burst of uplifting energy was a wonderful way to end this year’s congress!
A warm thank you to all attendees, speakers, and exhibitors for making Labquality Days 2025 a success! Next year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the event so please save the date 5-6 February 2026.
New Scheme: Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis, nucleic acid detection
Labquality EQAS by Aurevia is announcing a new EQA scheme for Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis, nucleic acid detection for 2025. The scheme is suitable for different nucleic acid detection tests.
The scheme includes two non-infectious liquid samples that should be analysed as regular patient samples. The participants submit their results through the electronic platform LabScala. Result evaluations including comments by the Scheme Expert will be published in the final report distributed to the participants. There will be two rounds in 2025. Please register to 5241 for Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis, nucleic acid detection.
Pipette Control: EQA Scheme for Pipettes
Labquality EQAS by Aurevia has a product for controlling and monitoring single-channel piston pipettes used in clinical laboratories. In this scheme participating laboratories are requested to perform multiple pipetting of a specific volume and to report the average of the obtained mass weights to LabScala.
This EQA scheme offers a possibility for clinical laboratories to perform intermediate performance checks between pipette calibration intervals including interlaboratory comparison and individual performance assessment against a reference measurement value. It does not replace pipette calibration. This year two rounds will be arranged, one in February and one in August.
Our EQA logistics team consists of seven individuals: EQA Assistants Virginia, Niika, Virpi and Anna, and Logistics Assistants Tero, Wini and Antti.
The EQA Assistants have several years of experience working in the team, the other team members have worked at Aurevia for 1–5 years.
EQA Assistants are responsible for everything related to sample shipping: receiving and labelling samples, assembling the shipping boxes, copying EQA round letters, and packing the shipments. Shipping the EQA rounds is done mostly manually from start to finish, and the team ships out around 80,000 sample shipments manually.
Logistics Assistants take care of co-shipments to countries that have distributors, and documents related to these, and finalize shipments that will be sent abroad.
Some team members also have additional responsibilities, such as ordering the striped boxes, envelopes, laboratory equipment, sample tubes, address and sample labels, as well as the maintenance of the label and folding machines. Around 200,000 labels and 6,000 envelopes are ordered annually.
The work is occasionally very hectic and requires good planning. Organizing one's own work and work days that are never alike are the best parts of the job, according to the team. It is also extremely important, that the team works in seamless collaboration.
